Sarah C. et. al - Hello, I am a Grade 12 student taking an extra english course in highschool, and our class has just finished reading "84" out loud. We enjoyed the letters, and our teacher suggested it, because it is one of her favorites as well. This was an interesting piece of writing, and we just wanted to share our feelings on it. Kathryn Schroeder - I love the movie 84 Charing Cross Road. Unfortunately for me, I only recently saw it for the first time. I am trying to get a copy of the book as well as a copy of Dunn's sermons as the movie has inspired me to get back to reading English literature. I'm an English major from the U.S. Thank you so much for this web page. I had no idea the bookstore and people actually existed. You have enriched my life! Wish me luck on getting some second-hand English literture books as I, like Helen, cannot afford to pay much, but am a great lover of English literture and old books. Unlike Helen, I teach in a further education college in New York City. It has been a joy reading and seeing pictures of the actual people portrayed in the movie as well as the actual bookshop. It is a shame it is now a wine bar! I did have the joy of spending two years in your wonderful country on a Fulbright/Central Bureau teacher exchange in Manchester. I do love your country and your literature. Thank you, again, for bringing 84 Charing Cross Road to life for me! Best regards, Kathryn Schroeder [2007-04-29 10:51:02]

Joanne Theodorou - THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! Wonderful website, very informative. I pass Helen Hanff's home (and indeed, where she passed away almost 10 years ago) every day. There is a plaque there honoring her memory, perhaps you would like to add a picture of this to your website? Again, I thank you for keeping the memory alive for fans of Helene Hanff, her wonderful love of British Literature and letters. Joanne, NYC 2/22/07 [2007-02-22 14:26:31]

Teresa George - I have been a fan of Helene Hanff since I read her first book, "Underfoot in Show Business" when I was a teenager. I then went on to discover the rest of her wonderful books, including "84 Charing Cross Road", which has become a personal favorite. I am making my first trip to London in May of this year (after dreaming about it for almost 30 years!), and I can't wait to see 84 Charing Cross Road - even if it is a Pizza restaurant now! Thank you for a wonderful website and resource! [2007-02-13 03:29:00]

Yank - As a fan of both the book and the film, I feel it needed to be said. I am from America. I've met and fell in love with a woman from Eastbourne, England. We met in a format not too unlike that of the story- through letters and correspondence- through the internet. Soon, very soon, I plan to ask her to marry me. Wish us luck. [2007-01-29 00:42:34]

Jamie - Thank you for working on this. I saw the movie first. What a love story! Then I became a HH fan. My husband bought the DVD for me and I shall never tire of watching it. john k - great site. i was introduced to 84 charing cross by a book that was written by leo marks, son of ben marks. he worked as a cryptographer in ww2, and refers to the bookstore quite often. he made a note about helene hanff's book, and that's where i got interested. saw the movie--and keep watching and watching. my daughter goes to columbia, so i always enjoy watching the protest video in the movie. finally went and bought the book at strand bookstore in nyc. really do enjoy looking at the follow-up info about the staff. Karen - As I was flipping through TV channels a few days ago, I stopped to watch the movie but was only able to watch about 45 minutes of it. I was captivated, so I ordered the movie on Netflix. My husband and I received the DVD in the mail yesterday, and we watched it in its entirety last night. I am an avid reader -- such a simple pleasure. I have been to London, but didn't know about 84 at the time of my trip! It will be a priority for me to pay a visit next time I am there! Thank you for maintaining this site. It was a pleasure to stumble upon on it. [2007-01-13 16:39:33]

Donna OLeary - I am making my second trip to London in May. I just finished watching the movie for the 10 or so time. I hope the movie was somewhat accurate. Did Helen really make it to London? I can't wait to go back and spend two weeks there just to get to know London. I love antiques and books as well. My home is full of English antique furniture. [2007-01-09 20:12:32]

Nita Johnson - I don't remember the 1st time i saw this movie but it's been a few years ago....I didn't catch it from the begining but was immediately drawn in....Well i have seen it twice in the last 2 weeks now(begining to end)....I love this movie and must have talked about it ENOUGH (my husband made it a point to let me know, this morning, "That movie,84 Charing Cross Road, comes on at 10:30 am.".....I swear i rescheduled a phone appointment so i could stay watch it!(i felt excited).....i want the pleasure of reading the book....I think i will search it out to purchase....I wasn't even aware that it was based on true events....i happened across the web site out of pure curiosity while typing the movie's title in to a search engine...You learn something new everyday!....i just told my 10 year old a summary of the WONDERFUL story and had his FULL attention..WOW! It just confims how truely, great it is!(to have that kind of a "pen pal" would be very rewarding} [2006-08-23 13:17:42] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ryan - Really nice to visit the world's most well-known and highly-respected bookstore on the Internet. Brilliant work! So sad that nowhere can this address 84 Charing+ being found in London now,a cafe or a Pizza Hut isn't what we expect to see there. Some improvements to be considered. It'd be really nice if a new directory about Ms. Hanff could be added. Without her publication, we wouldn't have known this whole moving story. Thanks. [2006-08-18 09:26:58] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Todd Herman - I was made aware of 84 Charing Cross Road through the movie of the same name which starred Anne Bancroft and the inimitable Anthony Hopkins. While many seem to have been most moved by the key relationship of the story, being one who has contracted that "gentle madness" of the bibliophile, I was equally moved by the relationship between the book and the reader. There are few greater pleasures in life than to hold a leather bound tomb of the Works of Tertullian printed in 1689 with its magical, aged scent of the leather and paper or to peruse, with wonder, the engraving-laden collection of essays on the Hundred Greatest Men such as Herodotus. Helene Hanff's love for the book is one which I can definitely identify with. [2006-08-12 10:32:20] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

marie scott - What a wonderful website - makes the book and film really come alive. It's a book I return to again and again. At the moment I am endeavouring to obtain a copy to send to a friend in Canada. Oh the joy of reading this book for the very first time. [2006-08-10 10:05:48] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

shirley klepac - I read the book&saw the movie in 1996 prior to a London visit..am now rereading it before another visit. Is the bookshop still there? [2006-08-06 16:20:35] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stella Johnson - How wonderful to find this website. My husband and I came to "84", the book, via the movie. That is, we saw the movie with Hopkins and Bancroft, and fell in love with it. My husband grew up in London during this time so it was particularly meaningful, while I was yet to be born but finally was in Helene's part of the country. Two things: I lived 8 blocks from HH and didn't even know about her then and also, my husband found a signed copy of "84" for $2 in a used book store. [2006-08-03 12:56:30] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maggie Leung in San Jose, California - Thank you for creating this Web site. It's amazing to see how HH's book and the resulting movie touched so many people. May friendship and books sustain us all. [2006-07-17 04:19:57] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jeanie Attenhofer - I correspond with a dear man in the U.K. and asked him about Marks & Co and if 84 Charing Cross Road was still there. The book and movie have always been two of my favorites and I was so thrilled this morning to receive your website. I feel like I know the shop. I'm an avid book collector and reader and Helene Hamff's book was so wonderful. Your site is wonderful. TTFN, jeanie [2006-07-15 10:21:07] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Diane Smith - What a great tribute to a great book store. Don't you just love the feel of an old book? I know I do. [2006-06-22 04:18:06] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nic Tatham - I used to work at 84 Charing Cross Road, when it was trading as Covent Garden Records. I spent three memorable years there, selling hi-fi equipment and Helene's book to the hords of largely American tourists who used to visit the shop and were bitterly disappointed it was no longer Marks & Co. [2006-06-01 22:14:44] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michael & Bruce, Los Angeles - We've just discovered your website, and write this while watching the film version on cable for the upteenth time. We've always found this a very charming and enjoyable story, and hope to locate the book in the near future. In April of this year we both took our first trip to London and saw/visited nearly every sight we'd waited a lifetime to see. We made a special trip to 84 Charing Cross Road, and were a bit taken aback to find a Pizza Hut at that address today. Is it possible that there is a second address of 84 Charing Cross Road (as we frequently have in America with north/south or east/west streets?) Glad to learn there is a website dedicated to this famous bookshop, and now we have to get back to watching the film. [2006-05-28 17:13:03] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marcy F Fiorica - I am quite a fan of the movie, made from the Helene Hanff book, "84 Charing Cross Road" starring Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins. [2006-04-30 14:57:39]------------------------------------------------------

Linda - Thank you so very much for letting me learn more about Helene's bookshop. Your website is a real pleasure, how I enjoyed seeing the photographs of the real Frank, Nora, and all the others as well as the photos of the store. I who haunt used bookstores would have enjoyed visiting 84 almost as much as Helen Hanff would. [2006-04-29 13:49:08] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gutsy - This is a great site for a Helene fan such as myself. How interesting to find out that some of the names were pseudonyms!! I bet Frank Doel never thought something he signed in 1936 would land up on a website in 2006. How outlandishly freakish it's just been for me to see a picture of the spine of 84 on Mark Cohen's desk. All I had to do was turn my head left and I had a view of the same edition spine in my bookshelf. I don't think it's a proof or review copy, as if Mark Cohen had cared to check the inside jacket of that book, he would have found that Marks and Co was referred to as Marks and Company. Since the Co actually stood for Cohen, his own name, this is an error he would have easily picked up in proofing! Helene Hanff herself only found this out later, from Leo Marks, and told us about it in Q's Legacy. Fantastic webpage, I will be visiting it again soon. Since I am a South African I have a vested interest in 'Megan Wells'- I would like to find out if her opinion of South Africa has changed, as Helene Hanff's did (In a postcard to me after 1994 she said that I could now write South Africa with pride, and I do). Regards, Gutsy [2006-04-17 16:59:26] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MĒ Rosario - I just loved Helene Hanff at the moment I began to read "84, Charing Cross Road". I was interested in her attitude as a reader: her book selection according to the season and so on. I researched into those themes and it is quite difficult to find a reader who explains so well her personal reasons. On the one hand, Helene Hanff was unknown in my country when my interest in her began. In 2003, a publising house translated into Spanish "84, Charing Cross Road". In 2004 the book was adapted on the stage with a great success, that it is continuing. On the other hand, I have just published my study about Helene. I annoted the references, perhaps somebody is interested in it: FERRER GIMENO, MĒ Rosario: "El viaje de Helene Hanff a 84, Charing Cross Road". Valencia, Universitat de Valencia, 2005. ISBN 8437062640. There are two prefaces, one of them is written by Steve Maggs (UK), and the other one by Isabel Coixet, filmmaker and director of the theatre adaptation of 84, Charing... in Spain. [2006-04-04 03:11:14] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Janice L. Greear, Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army - I have been fascinated with the book, and am on my way for a 'girl's night in' to discuss the book, watch the movie, and indulge ourselves in English tea.....thank you [2006-04-01 16:46:00]--------------------------------------------

sandra smith - Until recently,I had never even heard of Marks & Co, 84 Charing Cross Road, or Helene Hanff. Our local AmDram group (Ferring Amateur Dramatic Society) in West Sussex, of which I am a member, produced the play in March 2006. It was a huge success and very well received, bringing many members of our audience to tears (and nothing to do with the acting!). During the production of the play, I formed a great empathy with the characters, saw the film, read the book and since then, 84 Charing Cross Road and all its characters have become firm favourites of mine. How I would love to have known them all. [2006-03-28 07:58:54] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Melody - I stumbled across "84" and its sequel, "The Duchess" just a couple of weeks ago, fittingly, at a library 2nd-hand book sale. I'd never heard of them before but books about books are usually delightful, so I bought the pair. What fun! I wish I could have met Helene and I wish I could have visited Marks & Co... but it would have been hard to drag me away! [2006-03-17 08:20:47]

kent - It's a wonderful book.I enjoy it from the first time I found it,because I realizeed I had read some storys similar to it.And then I nearly spent a whole night reading it... ...Thanks for your great website!!! Carol - I love the movie and so enjoyed the book. Your website is great, and I am glad to see that others like this story as well. I have a dream that someday I could reread it in English . [2006-02-18 03:46:56] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jennifer - After reading the book and seeing the movie years ago, I went looking on the Internet for any further information about the 'real' people in the story. There was nothing. A million thanks to the creator and researcher of this website. Bravo! You've given all of us who fell in love with the story, and who just plain LOVE England, a place to go. You know how important that is. This website, to me, is the very reason the Internet should exist. It provides a space, a place, for average people to meet and share much needed, much desired information about anything! Helene Hanft would have appreciated that, I'm sure. [2006-02-14 16:26:11] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fan C. S. - It is really a good book and it has brought me all the smell and memories when I was studying in England. [2006-02-14 03:32:48] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cindy - I have only seen the movie, but will be acquiring the book. If I cannot find a complete list of the books she mentions in her letters by the time I purchase the book, I will compile it myself. I want to know why these books stir such passion! [2006-02-12 00:54:58]

Mark - What a wonderful site. I have just happened upon it and its glorious. Never having seen many of the faces of my favourite read, it is a revelation and I shall enjoy picking up the book again with these faces to put to the names. It is the most wonderful book in the world and I am sure, like many, I was lucky to recieve a short note in reply to a letter I sent HH when I was fifteen (some eighteen years ago). A wonderful woman and a wonderful site, well done. It would be nice to hear some information about Nora and a picture, the Duchess of Bloomsbury was hilarious. [2006-01-31 19:16:03] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Allan Larsen/Denmark - Thank you for a very nice website.I have always loved the antiquarian book trade and especially the old english bookshops.I am going to London in April and I will certainly visit 84 Charing Cross Road though the bookshop isn't there anymore. Keep up the good work. [2006-01-29 14:21:31] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kim Cherevas - I've just finished watching the film. I lost a very good friend of mine this weekend, he passed away in his sleep at the age of 61. This was his favourite movie. He had sent it to me back in 1988 on VHS with a cover he designed on his mac. He knew I would love it. Watching it now, after his passing, it really has affected me even more. I just ordered a used copy of the book as well. and thought I would like to find out more. so pleased that I came across this site. Thank you. [2006-01-17 02:01:23] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
